About Usher Syndrome

The Usher syndrome is the combination of the eye-disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa, and a hearing loss. Also, in some types of the syndrome, inner-ear functions do not work as supposed to, meaning that those suffering from this have balance issues. Usher Syndrome is a hereditary and  progressive genetic disease that is one of the major causes of deaf-blindness in the world. Still, it is a rare disease that only affect a tiny percentage of the worlds population.

I suffer from Usher Syndrome, type 3. I have a peripheral vision of about 7-9 degrees (from 180 degrees) and a hearing loss averaging minus 70-75db (from ~0db) in the speech area. I do not have malfunctioning balance organs in the inner ear. By international standards I’m considered deaf-blind.

UsherSyndrome.info is my site about the Usher Syndrome, it’s in Norwegian. For English speaking individuals, Wikipedia has a fairly decent article on the subject.
