Runde (13.05.2010)
Runde (Wikipedia) is an isle on the western coast of Norway. It’s famous for the great view, striking nature and its birds. I was lucky enough to get a chance to visit it last May when I visited my brother who lives in Ålesund, a city some miles north of Runde. This gallery is more of a documentary thingy, than artsy. I’m attempting to show the scale of the place, the high cliffs and steep descents. I’m not quite sure I succeeded, perhaps the vertigo took it’s toll ;) It’s pretty easy to climb to the plateau which constitutes most of the areal of the isle. However, on the south side of the isle, where several of these images are made, the plateau dives 150 or so meters straight into the sea. There’s no railings to hold onto, no safety lines so you’re left to your own devices and wit.
The weather out there is rough, there’s nothing between Runde and the wide open North Sea, in fact, if you’d sail straight west you’d either hit Iceland or Greenland. We where very lucky to find the place in relatively good weather conditions. A little wind, but I don’t think it ever gets very quiet in those parts. Enjoy!
