The Briskeby Girls (18.09.2010)
I did a shoot for the place where I work which is a high school and resource center for the hard of hearing. The intention was the production of photographic material suitable for use on websites, in brochures and similar. We opted to use students as models as they are the best ambassadors for this quite unique establishment. Five merry girls met and signed their models releases. The girls was a pleasure to work with and it was an all-round fun experience I think, for both me and them. Given the limited resources I/we had, I think the resulting material is quite acceptable and will do the intended job just nicely.
I did the job pro bono, donating limited usage rights of a selection of the photographs to the institution. Although owned by the Norwegian Association for The Hard of Hearing and thus privately owned, it’s basically a public service, being part of a nationwide and government-run support system for the hard of hearing as well as other groups with special pedagogical needs. My goal was to create images that showed students in rather natural and common situations where they would be at ease and let their personalities shine through without having to force poses. I feel I accomplished fairly well. The photographs are however staged and somewhat polished in post production, after all, these images will be used for marketing purposes.
For fun I named the gallery “The Briskeby Girls”, a word play on a webTV-show made by a national newspaper on a bunch of young aspiring (glamour) models in Oslo called “Oslo Girls”. Unlike the girls in that reality show, the Briskby Girls are the real deal and not attention-hungry make-up dolls.
This album presents a selection of the material, to show span of different kind of situations I shot. The whole shoot took some 3 1/2 hours from start to finish, including many breaks, and…pizza ;) I used additional lighting (speedlights) indoors, mostly just simple bouncing due to time constraints and the difficulty of placing umbrellas and stands in the relatively small rooms.
